You’ve probably heard addiction called a “family disease.” With biological, psychological, and social factors, addiction’s destruction goes beyond the health of the substance user, impacting trust and safety between kids, partners, parents, and siblings.

Most models don’t treat it that way, though. Addiction is treated like an individual problem, sending the person struggling away to find recovery. While they find recovery, their family is left reeling. Their partner and kids may feel hurt, abandoned, betrayed, angry, or scared. Unaddressed, those feelings may fuel the cycle of addiction, across generations.
